Shoukoku no Altair Wikia

Rumelina is a fictional continent in Shoukoku no Altair's universe. It is home to several powerful political entities: The Balt-Rhein Empire, Greater Turkiye, the City State of Venedik, the Kingdom of Urado, along with many smaller city states spanning its Central and Southern areas. The political and military struggle between the continent's major powers, particularly the expansion through force of the Balt-Rhein Empire, is the main driving factor in the story's development.

The continent of Rumeliana is divided mainly into six large regions.

The region in the northwest of the continent is called the “Balt Region.” It was in this region that, more than four centuries before the beginning of recorded history, the Balt-Rhein Empire was founded, after the rulers of one of the kingdoms in the region, the Kingdom of Gol, gradually annexed the other kingdoms of Balt. This is where the emperor's reign name, “Goldbalt,” comes from, referring to the fact that the imperial family originated in the Kingdom of Gol and annexed the other kingdoms of the Balt Region.

The region in the south-west of the continent, and south of the Balt region, is the Rhein region. This region was once made up of many small kingdoms that were also annexed, sometimes by force or through treachery, to the empire that would be renamed “Balt-Rhein”.

The region in the south of the continent is called South Rumeliana, and is composed of a multitude of small territories, city-states, duchies, etc.

To the east lies the region called Cuore di Rumeliana. Divided into many small republics, Cuore was once the center of Rumeliana civilization during the Phoenician Empire. One of the major cities in the region is the Republic of Venedik.

Just north of the Cuore lies the region of Greater Turkiye, divided between Turkiye proper and the four vassal sultanates that comprise it.

Finally, north of Greater Turkiye lies the Kingdom of Urado, protected by the sea on one side and impassable mountains on the other.

Trivia[]

  • In the anime version, they had changed Rumelina into Rumeriana.
  • The different regions of the continent draw inspiration from Renaissance Europe.
    • The Balt Region is inspired by the former Holy Roman Empire, and most of its inhabitants, both nobles and commoners, have Germanic names or first names. In fact, the language used by the imperial military to name their combat tactics is German.
    • The Rhein Region has more varied influences, sometimes Germanic, but sometimes French or English as well.
    • The South Rumeliana Region is Spanish-inspired, with several of its inhabitants' names and cities having Spanish-sounding names.
    • The Cuore di Rumeliana region is clearly Italian-inspired, particularly the republics and city-states of the Renaissance era, such as the two major cities of Florence and Vendik, inspired by the cities of Florence and Venice. However, we can note the city-state of Pheonicia, which is more Greco-Roman in inspiration and retains a more ancient aesthetic, and the city of Li'solani, which is also Italian in inspiration but is closer to South Rumeliana than to Cuore.
    • Great Turkiye is, of course, Turkish-Ottoman-inspired, both in the names of its inhabitants and its cities.
    • The Kingdom of Urado is Hungarian-inspired, as well as Romanian or at least Wallachian, as impalement is a form of torture used by the local government.
  • Name of Rumeliana is derived from two probable words:
  1. Rumeli[1] means ''Lands of the Ancient Roman people'' in turkish so the term 'Rumeliana' very similar to this.
  2. Rumeliana can also be translated in turkish properly, two words become Rumeli and ana so Rumeli means to lands of Romans and ana means to ''mother''so Rumeliana means to ''Mother of all Lands of Ancient Roman people.''
